Life has a way of humbling us. Whether it’s work stress, family chaos, or just feeling stuck, everyone hits rough patches. A little over a decade ago, I was in one of those seasons. I didn’t need a miracle—I needed movement.
So I showed up to the gym.
And somewhere between the warm-ups, the lifts, and the high-fives, I started learning things that changed more than just my fitness. I think most people walk into a gym wanting to change nothing but their bodies, but what gyms give you can be so much more than that.
Here are 10 lessons I’ve learned over the last decade—and keep learning—through consistent training at BGB CrossFit:
- I can do hard things. That voice in your head that keeps saying, “I can’t”? It’s lying!
- What looks easy rarely is. And what looks terrifying? Often ends in the biggest reward.
- Coaches matter. Trust the experts. They see what you don’t.
- Mistakes are data. Mess up, do it wrong, learn, adjust, keep moving forward.
- Time is weird. A 15-minute AMRAP can feel like forever—or be over in a blink.
- Form is king. Strength without technique breaks down when life gets heavy.
- Encouragement builds power. Give it. Receive it. Everyone gets stronger.
- I should’ve never stopped jumping rope as a kid. Double-unders are brutal.
- Grit trumps talent. All Day. Every Day. Consistency always beats intensity.
- Your mindset is the real muscle. Train it like everything depends on it—because it does.
Whether you’re starting your fitness journey or getting back into it, showing up is half the battle. And once you’re here—water bottle in hand, music bumping, smiles all around—you’ll realize you already won.
